This week, we proudly celebrated the official opening of our Cultural Expression — a striking new artwork that now welcomes students, families, and friends at the entrance to University Hall.
Created by UniHall student Kyeesha Bonney, a proud Wongi Noongar woman, the piece reflects the many diverse paths and stories that weave through our vibrant residential community. It stands as a powerful symbol of belonging, connection, and the shared journeys that shape life at UniHall.
Set within a beautifully landscaped, water-wise native garden — designed to echo the unique environment of the surrounding area — the space invites reflection, recognition, and celebration of place and culture.
This project has been some time in the making — and was most certainly worth the wait. Principal Mark Sampson reflected on its significance, saying:
“We wanted to pay our respects to the custodians of the land on which we live and work in a very visual and pragmatic way, and honour the Elders past and present of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation.”
He continued:
“We also wanted to acknowledge our support over the last 30 years for the many Indigenous students who have lived at UniHall — and to honour those who have overcome challenges to achieve personal success. Many of our Indigenous alumni have since returned to their communities and continue to contribute in meaningful ways to the betterment of their people.”
And finally, he shared:
“We envisioned the mural and garden as a storytelling space — a way for UniHall staff to educate and spark curiosity in our international students as they arrive in Perth and begin their UWA journey. Its prominent location provides an immediate and powerful message: our Indigenous culture is respected, valued, and woven into the fabric of UniHall.”
We’re deeply grateful to Kyeesha for sharing her vision and creativity, and for grounding our community in such a meaningful expression of identity and Country.
Special thanks also to Dr Richard Walley and Dougie Nelson for their invaluable support throughout the project, and to the many staff members who helped bring this dream to life.
