A Celebration of African Culture and Global Community

UniHall came alive with rhythm, flavour, and storytelling as we gathered for one of the most anticipated events of the year—International Night. This annual tradition, which began as “Asia Night” in the 1970s, has grown into a much-loved celebration of the incredible cultural diversity that defines our community. Each year, we spotlight a different region of the world, and this year, the focus was on the rich and vibrant continent of Africa.

From the incredible food spanning the continent to the heartfelt Q&A panel , where residents from various African countries took the stage to share their experiences, memories, and reflections on what makes their home countries so unique. With honesty, humour, and pride, they spoke about everything from history, politics and the economy  to challenges and hopes for the future. It was a powerful reminder of the depth and richness of African cultures—and how much we can learn from one another when we simply listen.

And of course, no celebration of Africa would be complete without music. The night pulsed with energy thanks to a vibrant playlist of Afrobeat, traditional rhythms, and contemporary African artists. There was dancing, laughter, and connection—proof once again that joy is a universal language.

To close the evening, the community gathered for the flag ceremony—a UniHall tradition that never fails to move. Residents proudly carried the flags of their home countries in a heartfelt parade, each flag raised high and full of meaning. As the procession moved through the crowd, the room filled with applause and admiration—a visual celebration of our community's shared pride in its diversity and global spirit.

International Night is more than just a themed event—it’s a celebration of identity, belonging, and respect. It invites us to see each other more fully and to embrace the many stories that shape our community.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this night possible—our resident panellists, performers, culinary team, volunteers, and staff. And thank you to the UniHall community for continuing to show up with open hearts and curious minds.

Here’s to many more years of sharing, learning, and celebrating together.
