From Bunbury to the Finish Line:Jemma is Running for a Cause

For University Hall student Jemma Swadel, running has become much more than just a hobby. What started as a personal challenge has grown into an opportunity to make a difference, with the second-year University of Western Australia student using her passion for running to raise funds for children and families in need.

Originally from Bunbury, Jemma is one of many regional students who moved to Perth to pursue higher education. Drawn to University Hall by its strong sense of community, she has embraced student life while building connections and finding new ways to give back.

Currently studying International Relations and Gender Studies at UWA, Jemma has her sights set on a future in international aid and humanitarian work, with a potential career in politics also on her radar.

"I've always wanted to work in a role where I can help people and drive positive change," she says.

That desire to make a difference is reflected in her latest challenge. Jemma has recently discovered a love for running and is putting her training to good use by fundraising for Telethon, which supports sick and disadvantaged children, and genU, which empowers and supports children and young people living with disability.

For Jemma, running is appealing because there is always a new goal to work towards.

"I like that it's something where you can always improve. You can run further, run faster, and keep challenging yourself," she says.

She also credits running with supporting her mental wellbeing, with training sessions now a regular part of her routine. Most days are spent preparing for two significant events later this year: the 12km City to Surf and the 21km Perth Running Festival half marathon.

While the physical challenge is considerable, Jemma is motivated by the opportunity to use her efforts to help others.

Beyond her fundraising and studies, Jemma is an active member of the UWA Women's Community, a group committed to supporting and giving back to the wider community through a range of initiatives and events.

To boost her fundraising total, Jemma will be holding a bake sale at University Hall on Monday, 24 August. She is encouraging fellow residents and staff to get behind the cause, whether through a donation, purchasing a sweet treat, or simply helping spread the word.

"The support from the University Hall community means a lot," she says. "Every contribution helps."

For those considering stopping by, there's an added incentive beyond supporting two worthy causes: plenty of delicious homemade cakes and baked goods.

So whether you're a keen runner, a passionate supporter of community fundraising, or simply someone who enjoys a good cupcake, make sure to visit Jemma's bake sale and help turn every kilometre into positive change.

Good vibes, great causes, and tasty cakes. What more could you ask for?

If you can't make the bake sale feel free to add to her total by donating here:
