This year’s Semester 1 2026 Commencement Dinner was nothing short of enchanting as UniHallers stepped out of reality and into the vibrant world of The Wizard of Oz. As part of the celebrations marking 80 years of UniHall, the Upper Quad was transformed into a sparkling Emerald City, setting the scene for an unforgettable evening of colour, community, and celebration.
A Welcome to Remember
More than just an official welcome for our new residents, the night marked the beginning of a year‑long tribute to UniHall’s remarkable eight‑decade history. Green lights shimmered, the yellow brick road glowed, and the atmosphere buzzed with excitement as residents arrived in their finest themed attire.
Our MCs—dressed as Dorothy, the Wicked Witch of the West, and the Tin Man from the original film—led us through a vibrant and entertaining program, keeping the crowd laughing, cheering, and fully immersed in the magic of Oz.

We were delighted to welcome Professor Tom Colmer, Senior Vice-Chancellor of UWA, as our special guest speaker. His insights into the significance of community, belonging, and academic adventure were the perfect complement to an evening built around connection and celebration.
Games, Laughter, and Community Spirit
No UniHall event is complete without a bit of fun, and the Commencement Dinner delivered in full. A lively “Get to Know UniHall” quiz put residents’ knowledge (and competitiveness!) to the test, while the roving mic segment gave everyone a chance to share first impressions, hopes for the year, and what makes UniHall special to them.
These moments of shared reflection and laughter reminded us of the heart of UniHall: the people.

As the formalities wrapped up and Emerald City’s glow deepened into the evening, the celebration moved to the dance floor. With music pumping and spirits high, residents enjoyed the perfect ending to a magical night—one filled with connection, celebration, and the promise of an exciting year ahead.
