Semester 2 Kicks Off with a Rugby-Inspired Celebration

The campus came alive with the roar of rugby and the rhythm of celebration as students gathered for the Semester 2 Commencement Dinner—this time with a sporty twist to honour the British and Irish Lions Rugby team’s tour in Australia.

Dressed in their favourite sports kits, residents filled the stadium, greeted by the sight of rugby matches streaming live on the big screen and the buzz of anticipation for the night ahead. The theme was clear: community, camaraderie, and kicking off the semester with energy and pride.

Resident MCs Ayesha and Yash brought the crowd together with humour and heart, setting the tone for an evening of connection and celebration. Principal Mark Sampson officially welcomed everyone, reflecting on the importance of community, getting involved and having fun. After all going to university and living on campus is a rare opportunity and he encouraged everyone to make the most of this life changing experience and the excitement of the semester ahead. Deputy Principal, Hayden Glass followed with a warm message about residential life, encouraging students to embrace every opportunity to connect, grow, and thrive.

A highlight of the evening was the spotlight on student leadership. Several student leaders took the stage to share their experiences and invite new residents—especially freshers—to get involved in clubs, events, and initiatives that make campus life vibrant and meaningful. Their message was clear: there’s a place for everyone, and participation is the key to making the most of university life.

As the formalities wrapped up, the DJ took over and the dance floor lit up. Students danced, laughed, and celebrated the start of a new chapter, united by sport, spirit, and shared experiences.

Semester 2 is officially underway—and if last night is anything to go by, it’s going to be one to remember.
