Planting Peace at UniHall

A new symbol of unity and hope is taking root at University Hall with the installation of our Peace Pole Garden — a space dedicated to reflection, respect, and the celebration of our diverse community.

Peace Poles are an internationally recognised symbol of peace, bearing the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in different languages. First introduced in Japan after World War II, more than 250,000 Peace Poles now stand around the world — in schools, parks, and community spaces — serving as gentle reminders of humanity’s shared wish for harmony and understanding.

At UniHall, the Peace Pole Garden holds a special significance. As a global residential community representing students from more than 50 nations, it reflects our commitment to recognising and honouring the contributions of our diverse residents, alumni, and staff. The installation is both a celebration of who we are and a daily invitation to live our values of respect, inclusion, and connection.

Standing proudly at the entrance to University Hall, the Peace Pole Garden will offer a quiet place for reflection, a welcome to all who visit, and a reminder that peace begins with understanding one another. We hope it will inspire all who pass through our gates to pause — even briefly — and consider how we can each contribute to a more compassionate and peaceful world.

We were also honoured to welcome Dr John Stace as a special guest at the event. A long-time advocate for peace and member of the Medical Association for Prevention of War (MAPW), Dr Stace has dedicated much of his life to raising awareness about the human costs of conflict, particularly nuclear war. Over the course of the afternoon, he shared thoughtful conversations with guests about the importance of compassion, dialogue, and global understanding — values that sit at the heart of the Peace Pole movement.

A retired country doctor who has served communities across Australia and Papua New Guinea, Dr Stace’s lifelong commitment to care and peace made his presence a fitting addition to the celebration.
